Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Mindanao

     Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area declared by President Fidel V. Ramos in the year 1998. It is located in Bunawan, Province of Agusan del Sur in Mindanao. It has an area of 19,200 hectares (47,440 acres).

     Agusan Marsh is one of the largest and the most contained freshwater catch basin wetland in the Philippines. The Marshland acts like a sponge, as it is nestled in the midwaters of the Agusan River drainage basin. Within its lakes, several floating houses can be found. It is also the place where the largest salt water crocodile named "Lolong" captured.

     The Marsh is a valuable habitat for water birds. When rainy seasons come, the water rise to create large lakes, and vast of ducks come to nest in the area. In dry season, thousand of birds come from Japan, China, and Russia to escape the winter season of Northern Asia.

     Different birds can readily be seen from a boat like wild ducks, heron, egret, kingfisher and some raptors such as the Philippine Serpent-eagle.

     Over 200 individual species have been known to spend at least part of the year in the marsh, making it one of Asia's most important transit points for wild birds.
